I'm definitely more in favor of Zero rather than Infinity. Infinity sports more enemy types, but the only objective is to survive (and rack up points), while Zero gives you objectives to complete such as defending a capship or taking down certain targets. If find objectives to be more compelling that score attacking.Really though, Infinity is dirt cheap, so if you want to know what the game plays like, you should probably go there first. Also I haven't played Zero on the easy mode, but before that, there were a lot of complaints about difficulty (the game pretty much assumes you're a genre veteran on normal/hardcore).That aside, Infinity gives you access to three Suits, while Zero only gets you 2 (the original plus the one from the DLC) unless you backed it on kickstarter. On the other hand, Zero gives you access to the bomber, interceptor, and fighter (it's notable that a third of the missions force you to use something other than the Strike Suit the first time you play them).
